Marlee Matlin in Monique Lhuillier at the Oscars: classic and elegant

April 2024 · 2 minute read

There was so much red at the Oscars last night and of course some of the dresses were better executed than others. We’ve already talked about Ariana DeBose and Tracee Ellis Ross’s boob cup looks. I think Marlee Matlin had my favorite red gown, although Rosie Perez was a close second. I’ll get to her shortly in another post!

Marlee was in this incredibly elegant Monique Lhuillier gown. It’s formfitting and simple and yet it’s not boring. The single detail, the gathered split waist, is just perfect. I’ve been accused of having basic fashion taste, which is fair, but I think I’m right to say this is stunning.

CODA of course won Best Picture last night, which was sadly overshadowed by Will Smith being a rage monster. It also won Best Adapted Screenplay for writer/director Sian Heder. She was wearing a sequin Michael Kors gown which she compared to a disco ball. I’ve seen versions of that on J.Lo and Naomi Campbell and she looks fabulous in it.

Emilia Jones was in Dolce & Gabbana. She’s a lovely young woman and both Kaiser and I wanted her to be nominated for Best Actress for CODA. She deserved something better than this snooze of a beige sequin cutout gown. She wore an incredible gown at the BAFTAs, and she should have saved that for the Oscars instead.

Amy Forsyth was in Marchesa. I feel bad for actresses who wear Marchesa, although this isn’t bad considering. This is like a paint by numbers dress.
